UPENEUS DAVIDAROMI, A NEW DEEP WATER GOATFISH (OSTEICHTHYES, MULLIDAE) FROM THE RED SEA

DANIEL GOLANI A1

A1 Department of Evolution, Systematics and Ecology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 91904, Israel

Abstract:

A new goatfish, Upeneus davidaromi, n. sp., previously misidentified as Upeneus subvittatus (Temminck and Schlegel, 1843), is described from the deep waters (150–500 m) of the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea. It differsfrom U. subvittatus, from the western Pacific Ocean, by its larger eye diameter, more robust tubules on the anterior lateral line scales, and possibly smaller maximum attainable size. It is distinguished from U. vittatus (Forsskål, 1775), its most closely related species in the Red Sea, by its smaller head, larger axillary scales, and different color pattern.
